The fire broke out early Thursday morning. The report shows two dead, a mother and her infant and four other victims.
A violent apartment fire broke out this Thursday morning and mourned a family and an entire district of Sin-le-Noble (North). A mother in her thirties and her infant, about a year old, perished in the flames.
• Six victims, including several children
After their intervention during this tragedy, the firefighters of the North reported two dead and four other victims. A mother and her child perished in the flames.
Two people were also seriously burned (the father and a three-year-old child), while two others were poisoned (two children aged five and nine), all belonging to the same family.
The father, in his thirties, was seriously injured and “80% burned”, explains Frédéric Fourtoy, public prosecutor of Douai at the microphone of BFM Grand Lille.
Firefighters also rescued four people using their large aerial ladder.
• A fire located on the sixth floor of the building
The intervention of the firefighters was delicate and for good reason, the fire broke out on the sixth floor of the building, early in the morning.
“Relief from Groupement 5 intervened for a violent apartment fire on the 6th floor of an apartment building located at the level of Avenue des Poètes”, detail the firefighters in their press release.
In the neighborhood, the fire roused several of the inhabitants from their sleep.
“I was sleeping and around 7 a.m. I heard people knocking on my door like crazy, reports Cathy, a mother who lives on the third floor of the building. I thought it was the police and when I opened the door, my neighbor across the street told me there was a fire and we had to get out of the house quickly.”
The mother of the family wrapped her daughter in a blanket in order to quickly evacuate the premises. “My spouse tried to climb to the sixth floor to try to save the family, but could not open the door because it was hot,” she breathes. Nearly fifty people were evacuated by firefighters this morning. “It was amazing, I’ve never seen that, relaunches the mother of the family. I don’t think I’ll go back to my accommodation”.
39 adults and 28 children were taken care of in order to be rehoused by families or in suitable structures, the building showing instability following the fire, say the firefighters.
• 50 firefighters mobilized
A total of 50 firefighters were mobilized during the operation, accompanied by five ambulances, but also “three fire engines and two aerial means”. The firefighters came to the end of the flames in the morning, in particular with the help of three lances.
“We were triggered at seven o’clock this morning for an apartment fire, reports Captain Guillaume Thiais, head of the Douai fire department. We had information that the apartment was completely ablaze.”
An investigation has been opened by the Douai prosecutor’s office to determine the circumstances of the tragedy.
