Art commentary

My Afghan Family freely adapts the book “Frišta” published by Petra Procházková in 2009 telling the story of a non-Afghan woman living in Kabul after the fall of the Taliban. It is the extremely difficult situation of women subjected to violence in a macho country and tested on the spot by the heroine, an observer of injustices but understanding the ambiguity of the system and tradition, which seduced the Czech director Michaela Pavlátová. The screenplay of his film therefore paints the portrait of Herra, a European in love who decides to follow Nazir in her country despite the circumstances and who will become a witness to the daily life, sometimes very painful, of Afghan women. Sterile in a country where descent is sacred, she will be forced to adopt a deformed child who will quickly prove endearing and very intelligent, shaking up family codes and bringing a touch of humor and kindness. The plot will make it possible to approach various aspects of Afghan life very disturbed by the events and the permanent conflict. This adult story could have resulted in a feature film with actors, but Michaela Pavlátová preferred to retain the animation technique, emphasizing the emotions through a stylized graphic style that allows the story to be centered even better on the characters, especially Herra, and to give a subjective description of the situation at the beginning of the 21st century in a country at war since the 1970s. On the oppression of women and their place in society, when the USA “defenders of democracy” left the country in 2021 and that the Taliban have returned to business, with the expected turpitudes, My Afghan Family takes on an even more striking dimension, while accurately qualifying the description of its characters, including men, doomed to a dramatic and definitive destiny. Splendidly constructed, delicately animated and intensely performed, My Afghan Family is a gem not to be missed. Pleasant to watch, humanly salutary by its observation of the constraints of the female condition in Afghanistan, this film gives a vision which can be extended to many other countries. For the subtlety of its description and for the force of its narrative, My Afghan Family is an animation for adults that deserves to be seen.
