Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani reveals that the Khan family will have a role in the upcoming movie The Marvels. Ms. Marvel was a six-episode Disney + streaming series that premiered on June 8 and introduced Kamala Khan to the MCU. Khan is a superhero fan who discovers that an heirloom from Pakistan – a set of bracelets – helps her channel her superpower, an ability to harness cosmic energy. In addition to exploring his superhero origins, the show followed the various dramas of his community in general, but especially his family, consisting of his father Yusuf (Mohan Kapur), his mother Muneeba (Zenobia Shroff) and his older brother Aamir. (Saagar Shaikh).
Although Ms. Marvel has her own world to explore in the series, filled with characters that populate her home, school, and mosque, she will join a new section of the Marvel franchise in the upcoming Marvels, which hits theaters. July 28, 2023. The film, directed by Candyman 2021 director Nia DaCosta, will combine the MCU threads of Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel and WandaVision. Officially a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, she will follow Brie Larson’s superhero, Carol Danvers, as she collaborates with Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau (the character who was introduced as an adult played by Teyonah Parris in WandaVision).
Marvel Entertainment took to Twitter to share a video that followed the cast and crew members of the MCU after their massive panel at yesterday’s D23 Expo 2022. Among the cavalcade of guests was Vellani, who was eager to share some goodies on The Marvels, even though she was careful to avoid spoilers. She revealed that, among the various superpowers in the Captain Marvel sequel, Ms. Marvel fans can be confident that there will be more material with the Khan family, playing a “fun” role that she is thrilled for people to see. Read Vellani’s full quote below:
We get more Khan family! I am so excited. They have such a fun role… It won’t be a spoiler- They have a really great role in the movie and I’m really excited for people to see the journey they are taking.
This revelation will likely reassure Ms. Marvel fans who were concerned that her story could be summed up in the stories of the more established heroes she would be partnering with this time around. However, Vellani has yet to reveal whether the film will feature other major characters from the Disney + series. The show was filled with memorable new characters, most notably her teenage peers such as Yasmeen Fletcher as her best friend Nakia Bahadir, Matt Lintz as the lovesick Bruno Carrelli, Rish Shah as her mysterious crush Kamran and Aramis. Knight as the Pakistani red dagger fighter Kareem.
Whatever other parts of Ms. Marvel that are included in The Marvels, the decision to include the Khan family will likely benefit the project greatly. As a teenager, most of Kamala’s decisions are shaped by the wishes of her parents, which will provide invaluable motivation for her character. Additionally, the sense of humor they harnessed in the series will almost certainly be put on display when they suddenly find themselves confronted with an Avenger in their home.
