10 Most Brutal DCU Kills, Ranked | Pretty Reel

It was revealed that Black Adam had to be edited multiple times to get a PG-13 rating due to the more visceral kills he displays (per Vulture). This is actually a common thing with the DC Universe, as it encompasses the darker, more violent content seen in the comics, with several movies being rated R.

As a result, there have been some rather gruesome endings for DCU characters at the hands of heroes and villains. Sometimes they’ve even appeared in the more family-friendly superhero movies, making them even more shocking to audiences.

10/10 Sivana’s assistant and the magic door

Shazam! (2019)

Director David S. Sandberg got his start in the horror genre and it shines through with Shazam! because almost everything with the seven deadly sins is disturbing. When Sivana draws the symbols needed to turn a door into the portal he desires, it only needs a sacrifice.

Sivana’s assistant provides just that as she touches the door in disbelief of the magic. It is then that she is killed through the doorway, screaming in agony as she is turned to ash. While not the DCU’s most brutal offering, Shazam! had mostly been a fun and charming superhero movie, so this moment lets audiences know not to reckon with the bad guys.

9/10 Sivana’s father is killed by greed

Shazam! (2019)

There’s no denying that Sivana’s father was a despicable person, but his death at the many hands of Greed is twisted and gruesome, even if it’s all off-screen. The man can’t move due to his wheelchair, so he is quickly tackled by Greed and torn apart by his hands.

This death was surprisingly similar to a death that featured in Mortal Kombat 11 which came out the same year. If a kill can be compared to a Mortal Kombat death, that’s a sign that it’s gruesome – but in the best possible way.

8/10 Shocking disappearance of an intergang mercenary

Black Adam (2022)

From the moment the mighty divine Teth Adam is resurrected in modern times, he wastes no time showing his dark side. When an Intergang mercenary attempts to impose himself on him, Adam grabs him by the neck and sends lightning bolts through the man’s body, resulting in a literally shocking death.

It’s surprising that this death was allowed in a PG-13 cut of Black Adam since the man is visibly fried to death until he’s a charred skeleton. Adam then smashes the skull open with his thumb, beginning a large massacre of many Intergang members.

7/10 Black Adam beats Sabbac

Black Adam (2022)

It’s another kill that wouldn’t be inappropriate for Mortal Kombat when Black Adam defeats the main villain Sabbac. Not only does he get to say his catchphrase, but he also uses his immense strength to separate Sabbac, splitting him in two.

In the final product, Sabbac’s blood is depicted as a lava-like substance, which makes the kill slightly less visceral. It wouldn’t be surprising if one of the original cuts had blood and blood for this kill. The act shows that even as an anti-hero, Adam has no qualms about killing his enemies, especially evil demonic entities.

6/10 The end of Rick’s flag

The Suicide Squad (2021)

James Gunn let everyone know from the start that no one was safe in The Suicide Squad, not even one of the main heroes: Rick Flag. Flag was a selfless while Peacemaker was a blind servant of Amanda Waller, resulting in a painful battle between the two soldiers.

Unfortunately, the fight ends when Peacemaker stabs Flag through the heart with a piece of porcelain. There’s even a glimpse of the heart from inside Flag’s chest impaled to effectively tell the audience that Flag won’t survive this brutal ordeal. It was an effective way for the filmmakers to make audiences immediately hate Peacemaker.

5/10 Batman uses a grappling hook launcher

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

When audiences first encountered Ben Affleck’s version of Batman, he wasn’t the caped crusader he was and it shows with his brutality when he goes to rescue Martha from KGBeast and his mercenaries. The warehouse fight in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is filled to the brim with a few brutal kills, but none of them exceed a certain amount.

Batman uses his grappling hook to cling to a huge wooden crate, then pulls it towards mercenaries. One of them is unlucky enough to be hit, and it’s pretty clear that his head hits the wall in a particularly hard way. No one is going to lose sleep over the death of a man paid to kill an innocent woman, but it was still surprising to see Batman so dark.

4/10 “Impressive” kill by Peacemaker

The Suicide Squad (2021)

Peacemaker takes the idea of a hit, a kill to another level when he and Bloodsport begin to show their effectiveness by brutally murdering people. Peacemaker ends this little game by casually firing his pistol at a man behind him without looking.

Except he doesn’t just shoot her, the bullet is also an explosive – so after a few seconds, the death proves even more brutal. Although it turns out he was one of the good guys and Peacemaker is a horrible person, even Bloodsport admits he was “awesome” in his brutality.

3/10 Steppenwolf’s fury at an Atlantean

Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)

One of the best changes to Zack Snyder’s Justice League was making Steppenwolf a menacing villain. One of the best examples of this is when he interrogates an Atlantean soldier for information about Atlantis’ Mother Box.

Steppenwolf wastes no time and bludgeons the Atlantean before throwing him against a rock, causing the Atlantean’s skull to split open. Steppenwolf isn’t just a big monologue villain, he backs up his bark with a bite, as if sown through brutal kills like this.

2/10 Shark Attack

The Suicide Squad (2021)

This murder isn’t all that different from Sabbac’s death in Black Adam, but King Shark does it with even more brutality. He doesn’t just pull apart Private Corto Maltese, he first digs his hands into his stomach, then pulls him apart and thanks to an R rating, all the gore is shown in a ridiculous but entertaining way.

It’s amusing that King Shark is actually one of the most charming and likeable members of Task Force X in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and he ends up having some of the most brutal kills in the film.

1/10 The death of Starro

The Suicide Squad (2021)

No one really knew what to expect when it came to Starro The Conqueror’s death in The Suicide Squad, but surely no one expected what they had. Ratcatcher proves she is the most powerful member of the team by unleashing legions of rats to climb up and devour Starro.

At the same time, Harley Quinn uses the javelin she had been holding onto to impale herself through Starro’s massive eye, allowing him and the rats to swim in his watery humor; the rats even begin to eat and tear his innards. The equivalent of that would be a human being swarmed and killed by thousands of ants crawling on them, eating them to death – which would be a truly gruesome and brutal way to go.
