Within the family business STM Nervithe third generation is now in control. Gregory and Anthony Nervi took over ownership of the capital of the Manosquine company in December 2021, inheriting a fast-growing company with a turnover of €8.5 million. But above all from an emblematic company in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, created in 1947 by their paternal grandfather.
A form of consecration for the two brothers who have always imagined being part of the entrepreneurial history of the family. If they intend to impose their mark by redeveloping the worksite activity, they will also have the heavy task of maintaining the rank of leader imposed by their predecessors: Guy Nervi, their father, at the helm of the company between 2005 and 2015, Chantal Nervi, their aunt, at the head of the company between 1992 and 2005, and of course Ferdinand Nervi, their grandfather.
Work your way up
” We have always worked with the possibility of taking over the family business in mind. “, explains Anthony Nervi, who joined in 2012 as site foreman, before becoming, two years later, works foreman, accompanying the director whom he gradually assists. ” We were aware of the responsibility incumbent on us and did not want to skip the stages », Assumes the leader, trained at the CFA de Mallemort and graduated with a CAP maintenance and maintenance of machinery, a professional baccalaureate obtained while he was at Colas and a BTS TP.
His brother, Grégory, meanwhile joined the company in 2016 after being overtaken by ” the passion for the material “. Trained by the director at the time, Denis Chastel, he first validated a machine operator CAP in 2017 and then trained as a team leader and site manager in 2019. He succeeded his trainer before his departure to retirement in August 2021. At the Nervi, you have to prove yourself and only commitment and hard work pay off.
A woman in the construction industry
This is the observation made in its time Chantal Nevi. She has long been one of the few women at the head of a construction company. ” I didn’t have to show my teeth, I imposed myself through my work. When we work a lot, whether we are a woman or a man, it doesn’t change anything. To manage a public works company, it is essential to know the equipment, its characteristics, its performance and its lifespan. But being in the bath since childhood it was not very difficult. »
When Chantal Nervi joined the company in 1962, she was 18 at the time and had no idea that she would spend her life there, meeting her husband Jean-Marie Huriot there. ” Not a dull day in sixty years of career, passed like a flash that leaves a few powders of gold, gravel and earth », it is in these terms that Chantal Nervi sums up her investment. At 78, she has just left the presidency of the supervisory board. ” I always stay active. I will be able to say that I am really retired within two years when I will have moved to Cannes “, she laughs.
Today, STM Nervi employs 45 employees on permanent contracts and 15 to 20 temporary workers on a yearly basis. The company has a fleet of 72 machines enabling it to offer a wide range of services, which may include crushing, screening and demolition activities. The objective is to reach €10 million in turnover in 2022.
How STM Nervi acquired its letters of nobility?
It was in 1947 that Ferdinand Nervi created the eponymous company in Céreste. He started his activity with a threshing machine and an agricultural tractor and then specialized in large-mass earthworks. The company took off in the midst of the reconstruction of France. Between 1955 and 1960, it had 40 permanent workers and participated in particular in the construction of the Serre-Ponçon dam in 1955 or the deviation of Sallanches in 1962.
In 1972, the company set new directions by positioning itself in the rental of heavy construction equipment in Paca, by creating STM and by setting up its headquarters in Manosque. The workforce was then 118 employees. In 1975, the company continued its structuring and forged close ties with that of Frédéric Gardiol, a friend of Ferdinand Nervi. Together they create the Var TP means group, which brings together 108 machines and 181 people. For nine years, the group multiplies the big projects. At the same time, the company consolidated its bases by acquiring ownership of the Roche Amère quarry. It then specialized in quarrying for large groups such as GSM, Lafarge Holcim, Eiffage and Eurovia.
In addition, there is an exceptional transport activity in order to provide construction sites with the necessary equipment as soon as possible, and to carry out all types of transport of equipment, from 10 to 70 tonnes for various customers throughout France. . And finally a road activity and various networks. Among other emblematic projects, STM Nervi took part in the construction of the Millau viaduct in 2003.
