Another year, another highly anticipated film from Walt Disney Animated Studios. 2021 has been a pretty big year for the entertainment juggernaut that is Disney, with Raya and the last dragon receiving an incredible amount of praise from critics and fans alike, but even that has nothing to do with the Oscar-winning actor’s astronomical success Charm.
Now the “House of Mouse” is ready to embark on its next all-new adventure, this time with the aptly titled strange worldbrought to you by the same people behind the aquatic beauty of Moanathe cute and cuddly superhero action of Big Hero 6and many more modern Disney classics.
Before we pave the way to a strange new world, here’s everything we know so far about strange world.
Editor’s Note: This article was updated on November 21.
As usual for the first trailers for new Disney animated films, the first trailer for strange world chooses to market itself on its visuals rather than displaying its history, and what visuals they are.
The technical ability on display here (to no one’s surprise) is undoubtedly impressive, but from a design and art style perspective, it feels like another level. Everything from the unique color palette and quirky creature design, it’s already easily one of the most visually distinct Disney animated projects in a long, long time.
Although the story is not revealed too much, the trailer introduces the protagonist of Searcher Clade and his internal conflict, while showing a Johnny Quest kind of feel with a classic adventure vibe.
The second trailer and the first full trailer of strange world went live on September 21. This trailer gave audiences a much better idea of the film’s overall plot, as our hero Searcher Clade and his family are whisked away from their farm and brought to a colorful and intriguing new planet where Searcher reunites with his long lost father.
A third trailer or “special look” for Strange World was released online on October 19. The trailer doesn’t necessarily give us any new information, but it seems focused on the fact that the film will emphasize the generational differences between the three clades.
When and where will Strange World be released?
Disney is set to stake its claim on the Thanksgiving weekend once again this year, as they have done in the past with megahits like the Frozen movies and Pixar coconut. strange world will officially be released exclusively in theaters on Wednesday, November 23, 2022.
This means that unlike the Pixar Soul and turn red, strange world won’t get a Disney+ premiere on that Nov. 23 date.
What is the plot of Strange World?
strange world centers on the aptly named Searcher Clade, a member of the Clade family whose legendary exploits cement them as the greatest explorers of all time. Searcher, however, doesn’t seem to have any interest in following in his family’s footsteps, instead wishing to live a quiet life as a farmer instead of the extremely loud, unpredictable, and dangerous life of an adventurer.
All of that could very well change for Searcher when he and his family stumble upon a world that defies explanation and all but refuses to follow the established fundamental laws of nature. Searcher and the rest of his family couldn’t be more different in their responses to conflict and danger, but they’ll have to put aside this arbitrary family drama if they’re truly to experience what this whole new frontier has to offer. .
The official synopsis via Disney reads:
The feature film features a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate a treacherous uncharted land alongside a ragtag crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog, and a host of creatures. voracious. “Inspired by classic adventure stories,” said director Don Hall, “’Strange World’ is an original animated adventure/comedy about three generations of the Clade family who overcome their differences while exploring a strange, wonderful, and often hostile.”
What inspired Strange World?
Director Donation Room cited early 20th century pulp comics as the primary inspiration behind the thematic tone of strange world. He explained that these comics were a childhood influence when he allegedly said:
“I loved reading back issues of pulps growing up. They were great adventures in which a group of explorers could discover a hidden world or ancient creatures. They were a huge inspiration for ‘Strange World’.”
That influence can certainly be seen in this first trailer, starting with black-and-white topicality and then immediately following with classic storytelling complete with a glorious transatlantic accent. Heck, even the movie poster seems to tease the pulpy adventure feel, appearing as if it was designed to look like a worn, bent parchment.
It’s also hard to think of some other Disney properties that have taken inspiration from this tone and style, including Pixar’s legendary teardrop, At the top. The opening of At the top literally has its main character Carl Fredricksen watching a newsreel about the exploits of Frankish adventurer, Charles Muntz (although hopefully the Clades will be a little friendlier than Muntz was).
Another Disney image that comes to mind is the cult classic epic Atlantis: The Lost Empire, which also follows a diverse and likeable cast of characters as they explore locations that have been largely untouched by the outside world. Even Marvel moon knight briefly drew inspiration from this pulp subgenre, tying Stephen Grant’s origin to a fictional action-adventure series.
Who makes Strange World?
Experienced Disney director Don Hall will direct strange worldafter bringing success to the Mouse House with hits like Big Hero 6, Moanaand Raya and the last dragon. Although Hall will not write this time around as he did with Rayahe will work again with the screenwriter Who Nguyenmanufacturing strange world is the second animated feature he has written.
Roy Conley will produce. Conli has been producing for the Walt Disney Company since 1996 The Hunchback of Notre Dameand with his recent duties heavily focused on Disney Nature documentaries, this will be Conli’s first animated feature production since Big Hero 6 in 2016.
Who is part of the cast of Strange World?
The protagonist Searcher Clade will have the voice of Spider-Man: Far From Homeit is Jake Gyllenhaal, whose famous lineup of actors will surely bring depth to our main hero. It is also confirmed that Alan Tudyk will play a role in the film, which means he will continue his streak of appearances in all of the Walt Disney animated films that began with Ralph’s Wrecks.
Joining Gyllenhaal will be Dennis Quaid (Two days later) as Searcher’s father, Jaeger Clade, Jaboukie Young-White (Prime Video Fairfaxlisten)) as Searcher’s teenage son, Ethan, Gabrielle Union (Bring it onlisten)) as Meridian, Searcher’s wife, and lucy liu (Kill Bill Vol. 1) as Callisto Mal, the leader of the country of Avalonia and the leader of the Clade’s family exploration.
