European Heritage Days 2022: here are five sites to discover in the Hautes

The European Heritage Days are an opportunity to discover exceptional places that are often closed to visitors. And this at reduced prices or free of charge.

These days take place this year on September 17 and 18. In the department of Hautes-Pyrenees, many activities are offered. Here is our selection.

Visit of a hydroelectric plant

Meet at the Tech dam, at Arrens Marsous. A guided tour of the Tucoy hydroelectric plant is offered during Heritage Days.

Escape to the Age of Enlightenment

It is a place steeped in history. the Gardères castle can be visited during Heritage Days. Outbuildings, majestic driveway,… The current castle and its outbuildings were built by Baron Jérôme de Day in 1723 on the site of an old 15th century castle.

The birthplace of Marshal Foch

In the heart of the city of Tarbesnear the Sède cathedral, is the Birthplace of Marshal Foch, one of the great actors of the First World War. This beautiful Bigourdan-style residence brings together memories of the Marshal and his family. Ferdinand Foch spent the first twelve years of his life there.

In the last year of the First World War, in the spring of 1918, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Allied forces on the Western Front.

Discovering a Cistercian abbey

Founded in 1140, the cistercian abbey de l’Escaladieu is located at the foot of the Mauvezin castlenear two spa towns that are Capevern and Bagneres-de-Bigorre.

Since 1997, the abbey has been the property of the Departmental Council of Hautes-Pyrénées, which ensures a long-term restoration program there.

At the Eagles Dungeon

the Beaucens Castle has been transformed into a zoological park, the Eagles Dungeon », where you can admire birds of prey in flight around the ruins of the castle, with a view of the Gaves valley.
