In the heart of Rome, a few steps from the Pantheon, the heart of the noble art of the blade has been beating for over 140 years: five generations of the Musumeci Greco family have marked the style of fencing, starting with the founder Salvatore Greco dei Chiaramonte (born in 1835). But with the great Agesilao that tradition unites fencing and cinema, since his debut in front of the camera in 1913 with Lassalto fatale by Gerolamo Lo Savio. A tradition continued by the heirs Enzo and (today) Renzo who have crossed blades with the greatest movie stars, so many that the list is overflowing: Errol Flynn, Vittorio Gassman, Charlton Heston, Burt Lancaster, Tyrone Power, Gina Lollobrigida, Richard Burton , Orson Welles, Giancarlo Giannini, Domenico Modugno, Max Von Sydow, Ruggero Raimondi, Roberto Bolle, Alessio Boni, Michele Placido
From 17 to 19 September, thanks to the initiative of the CSC-Cineteca Nazionale in collaboration with the Academy give me Musumeci Greco and the Casa del Cinema, the AT THE SWORD will propose some of the great swashbuckling films that bear the Musumeci Greco brand in the outdoor arena Ettore Scola and in the Deluxe Room. The films on the program photograph different moments of virtuosity and spectacle but do not forget an important anniversary such as the centenary of Vittorio Gassman, honored by a masterpiece such as The Desert of the Tartars by Valerio Zurlini (1976). Among the other films on the program Alberto Lattuada’s The Tempest, Alessandro Blasetti’s Unavventura by Salvator Rosa and Luchino Visconti’s Linnocente.
The evenings will be introduced and commented by Alberto Anile (curator of the National Film Archive), Renzo Musumeci Greco (fencing master and president of the Academy), Giorgio Gosetti (director of Casa del Cinema), while for the inaugural appointment there will be a happening dedicated to the big blades between entertainment and sport.
The most exciting and cinematic of sports says Alberto Anile – made up of jumps and assaults, of impetuous aggressions and cautious retreats, pure emotion linked to strict rules of competition and honor. Always on guard, the Musumeci Greco dynasty has crossed the history of cinema, not only Italian, giving thrills and elegance to every kind of film, from author’s film to honestly commercial work. This selection is just one of the many possible combinations among the dozens and dozens of films preserved in the archives of the Cineteca Nazionale in which a family of swordsmen has handed down a timeless mastery.
The story and show cinema observes Giorgio Gosetti and the duel is always a fantastic protagonist: virtuosity and illusion, noble confrontation and no quarter struggle. On the screen we have loved swordsmen and pirates, soldiers and gentlemen and always have palpitated for our intrepid heroes or heroines. To put it this way it seems that we are talking about an era as golden as it is over in cinema and instead Renzo Musumeci Greco will take us on a journey through the years that arrives at the present and gives us the absolute pleasure of the great show to be looked at with wide eyes like eternal children.
Fencing, more than any other sport, is close to art, as shown by the history of the family whose heir I am honored, concludes Renzo Musumeci Greco. Since 1913 my ancestor Agesilao, my father Enzo and then myself have intertwined our lives with sidearms of all kinds, teaching athletes and actors not only to shoot, but above all the rules, respect and magic of this discipline. , which, even in stage form, is the result of determination, training and, of course, interpretative skills. Thanks to the Cineteca Nazionale and the Casa del Cinema, we will close the summer of 2022 with a summary of some of the 126 films in which we have worked, this time only Italian. Who knows if, in the future, we will also be able to give space to foreign ones, such as Ben-Hur, Cleopatra, Don Giovanni by Joseph Losey, El Cid, The Fall of the Roman Empire and Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci, our latest effort in the field cinematic. Who will live will see!
